Understanding Blu-Ray Technology
Blu-Ray technology has been in the pipeline for a decade or so, ever since the first inklings of
high definition home displays for the consumer. It is commonly known as BD or Blu-Ray disk,
and is a format that is physically very similar to CD and DVD technology, but gets its name
from the colour of the laser which is used to read data from and burn data to the disk.
Blu-Ray is essentially a much larger capacity optical format than its predecessors,
with over six times more storage than a dual-layer DVD, which made it perfect for storing HD content,
which takes up a lot more space. Blu-Ray players are now more available and far more affordable
than they were, and this is partially due to the fact that it won the format war against the
Toshiba-backed HD DVD format. Sony and Panasonic were the key Blu-Ray backers during the war,
and are still the most comprehensive supporters of the format. But what does all this history
and technology mean for the average consumer, and what
are the benefits and functions of Blu-Ray Technology?
Blu-Ray and HD Video
The form of Blu-Ray that most people will come into contact with is the films and TV shows
that are being sold in HD on Blu-Ray Disks. To play these disks you will need a Blu-Ray Disk player,
of which there are a fairly wide selection, and most importantly an HD ready TV, usually with an
HDMI port so that you can hook up the BD Player. With Blu-Ray you can have resolutions of up to 1080p,
which is referred to as `True` HD, but the actual resolution that is available to you will depend on the
capabilities of your HD TV set. Nearly every new big movie release will feature both DVD and BD
versions of the film being sold, and there are over 1000 features currently available in HD on
BD with prices always falling as a more widespread uptake of the technology occurs.
Blu-Ray Technology and Gaming
Sony`s Playstation 3 is probably the reason that Blu-Ray won the format war, as every PS3
game comes on a Blu-Ray disk, and as games also increase in terms of the amount of data
they require and the resolution also becomes HD the increased storage of a BD was the way to go.
Additionally, the PS3 also functions as a player for BD movies and videos, so thanks to BD`s
success it`s become a bit of a media powerhouse and made the format a widespread success.
Because of the HD format wars and the gradual decline of the DVD as a format, when you`re
looking at what DVD players
are available, you might consider getting yourself ready for the imminent switch over and look into a
Blu-Ray player. Blu-Ray will soon also be the next format of choice for PC users as more and more
storage is required for files, and in the future BD`s with capacities in excess of 100GB will be
available, so it`s really the way forward.
